The villa is hit by a slice of light between cloud shadow; the streak of light behind the cypresses on the left draws attention to their formation.
I was initially despondent on this morning in late October at the growing, blobby cumulous cloud – existing plans had to be put aside. But soon I realised we had the perfect conditions for highlighting a building in the landscape. I spent around an hour at this location, watching the possibilities of light and shade. When faced with mobile conditions like this, it makes sense to shoot a series of images, but after this sequence had passed through the landscape, I was fairly sure that I had what I wanted.
If prevalent lighting conditions don't match the images you intended to make, look instead for a shot to match lighting conditions rather than for the lighting conditions to match your intention.
