Biography
My journey in landscape photography began in the early 2000s, when I began to travel to Tuscany, always independently, inspired by the work of other photographers I had seen. An initial inspiration became a love affair, a love affair a habit ... and after five trips or so I had enough of a portfolio to show to publishers. On the back of this portfolio I was taken on as lead photographer for The Rough Guide to Tuscany and Umbria in the mid 2000s, covering the entire region for the publisher across a variety of seasons. Since then my work has appeared in over ten Rough Guides as well as in photographic books and magazines.
My style away from commercial work is driven primarily by the use of colour for mood. My preference is for 'total colour', to make an image in predominantly one overall colour or mood. When this is not the case I may alternatively use strongly contrasting or complementary colours – just a few colour blocks – in juxtaposition. The emphasis on colour/mood most often leads me to work with a moderate telephoto lens, projecting into the landscape, eschewing the super-wide-angle, racing-foreground-to-background style very prevalent at the moment. These have not been conscious decisions but an evolution of style. I am looking for containment in the image, a sense of tableau which is the antithesis of the racing-foreground-to-background style.
My preferred formats are square and panoramic. Square has a sense of containment favourable to an interest in creating 'total mood'. Panoramic allows me to stretch the scene – provide something over which the eye can flow – while avoiding the front-to-back rush. My work is unashamedly romantic, and my preference is for agriculturally managed, domesticated landscapes – particularly those of southern Europe – rather than wilderness.
The best photography comes from knowing a destination intimately – how it appears in different seasons and what makes that characteristic – and for this reason my photography tends to focus on a particular region for a while.
